The final scorecards read 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, all in Adesanya's favor.

Originally billed as the co-main event, the Adesanya-Silva showdown was elevated to main event status, and it didn't disappoint.

Israel Adesanya defeated his idol Anderson Silva via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 234 in Australia on Saturday. Gastelum, of California, is riding a two-fight win streak, including a split-decision victory over Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza.

In the first round, 29-year-old Adesanya landed several kicks and right hands. It's one of those situations, had it popped up during the fight it could have been fatal for him so this is really serious. Adesanya dominated the strike count and his leg strikes were far more frequent, leading the judges to come to the same conclusion.

Immediately after the fight ended, Silva was overheard saying to Adesanya: "I pass the baton to you".

"This is like, if I'm playing basketball, to play against Michael Jordan".

Though Silva lost, Conor McGregor took to social media to express his appreciation for Silva's effort.

"I love my job", Silva said following the fight. I know it's tough. Silva waited patiently for opportunities to counter, but he wasn't able to return to his glory days when he won 16 bouts in a row and was unbeaten for almost a decade. This is my life.

"I try to fight in Curitiba, my city".

Australia's UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker withdrew from his championship defence against Kelvin Gastelum on Sunday at UFC 234 because of an abdominal injury and subsequent emergency surgery.

6 Degrees Management, who manage Whittaker, released a statement during the event that the middleweight champion required dual surgery for a twisted and collapsed bowel as well as an internal hernia of the intestine. There is no timetable for his return.

Provided Robert Whittaker heals quickly, it sounds as though the UFC's intention is rebook his planned fight with Kelvin Gastelum - perhaps as soon as April.

The most unsafe moment for Adesanya came in the third round, when Silva launched into a flying knee attempt. Adesanya sidestepped the blow, however, and went back to work.
