In addition to Childish Gambino, credited songwriters Young Thug and composer Ludwig Göransson received the win.

Childish Gambino's "This Is America" was the victor of not only the best song of the year but also scored the Grammy for record of the year for rapper Donald Glover.

"This Is America" beat out "All the Stars" by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai, "God's Plan" by Drake, "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes, "The Joke" by Brandi Carlile, "The Middle" by Zedd & Grey feat.

The disturbing "This is America" video took the internet by storm last spring, amassing more than 35 million views on YouTube in just two days.

However, the absence of the recording artist does not negate the fact that "This Is America" is the first rap song to ever win the award.

It looked at the representation of black people in America and the prejudices they faced.

He said he did not know why Gambino had declined to attend but explained how important recognising rap and hip-hop artists at the Grammys was.

"It's about time that something like this happened with the Grammys".

Earlier, he won Grammys for Song of the Year (best song writing), Best Music Video and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
