Already a show with a strong lineup of female performers and nominees, the Grammys sprung another surprise by including former US first lady Michelle Obama in an opening that also featured Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, actress Jada Pinkett Smith and host Alicia Keys talking about the power of music. How uplifting and motivational it was to hear these women speak about the importance of music in their very different lives, to share in their uplifting stories and feel that love. "If you see someone that's hurting don't look away". It allows us to hear one another.to invite each other in. But with Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes, Cardi B, and Travis Scott among the evening's performers, there won't be a shortage of star power.

Lopez - who has parlayed her successful music career into acting - said that music "kept me moving from the block to the big stages and even bigger screens". Her most recent win came at the 56th annual Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album for Girl on Fire.

Alicia Keys finished off the powerful moment by adding: "What is better than this?" "Music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrow, our hopes and joys".

During the show, Keys skillfully sang a melody of songs - playing two pianos at the same time nonetheless. In the closer, when she pegged "New York" as the song she wrote that she wished she'd written, it was completely the stuff chef's kiss emojis are made for. Meanwhile, those who choose to watch the ceremony on TV can catch the live broadcast of the Grammy Awards at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

Cardi B enjoying her honest surprise. The Star Is Born actress, 32, and the 8-year-old, whose mom is actress Paula Patton, had a cute moment where she bent down to say hello. Kacey Musgraves and Cardi B cleared up in the traditionally male dominated categories of "Album of the Year" and "Best Rap Album" respectively, while Dolly Parton and Diana Ross received lifetime achievement awards.
