"I went and opened the drain and I went down and I looked".

Lyron Lovdale climbed down inside the drain when he realised the noise might be a baby crying and shone a light into the pipe and saw the naked new born.

Various emergency services were involved in the wonderful rescue.

Following a nail-biting three-hour rescue mission, Garreth Jamieson of Rescue care confirmed that the little girl was alive and stable.

The baby, believed to be a girl, was stabilised at the scene and loaded into a medical helicopter and taken to a hospital.

Robert Mckenzie, KZN EMS spokesman, said the baby girl had been washed around five metres down the pipe (which is around six centimetres in diameter).

She's been airlifted to hospital and is in a stable condition.

"This matter will have to be investigated, to find the parents", he added.

He added:' It is great news she has been rescued and she is now in a stable condition so a great ending for all the rescuers and personnel and paramedics who did this.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, the baby died. "The community was very helpful and supportive which we are also grateful for".
