Resurgence of measles in Philippines kills 70 so far this year

Of note, 70% of cases and 88% of deaths due to measles had not been vaccinated.

A case of measles diagnosed in Canberra in mid-December was also linked to an overseas trip and the January 2 case was believed to have been infected by this person.

President Duterte himself will now step up and appeal to the public to have their kids vaccinated following the declaration of a measles outbreak in different parts of the country, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Sunday.

In Toronto, public health authorities last week warned that some travellers through Pearson International Airport on January 27 may have been exposed to measles. "Measles outbreaks have been seen in countries reporting good national vaccine coverage, evidence of immunisation gaps and highlighting the need to ensure high sub-national coverage, particularly among vulnerable populations".

More than 82,000 people in Europe contracted the virus, which killed 72 people. It was three times the total reported in 2017 and 15 times the record low number of people affected in 2016.

The mandatory basic immunization for all infants and children provided under RA 10152 covers measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases such as Tuberculosis; Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis; Poliomyelitis; Mumps; Rubella or German measles; Hepatitis-B; and H. Influenza type B (HIB).

Public health officials in Vancouver have said the latest case of measles there is not connected to the outbreak in Washington state, where 53 cases of the virus have been reported in Clark County since the start of the year, with one more in King County and four others in neighbouring Oregon. People who have previously had the infection do not need immunization.

But it's not just Washington State that has witnessed a resurgence in the number of measles cases in recent years.

"Some of the parents reasoned out that they were busy or they live far from the health centers", Fantone said. "When the rash appears, a person's fever may spike to more than 104° Fahrenheit (40° Centigrade). After a few days, the fever subsides and the rash fades". "There's nothing that's going to change my mind on this on that specific vaccination", said mother Monique Murray.

"People born in 1966 and later who do not have two recorded doses of MMR vaccine are also considered susceptible to measles". In particular response to the current measles outbreak, PPS and PIDSP also now recommend pediatricians to administer the first dose of measles vaccine to infants starting at the age of 6 months instead of the usual 9 months as recommended in the country's Childhood Immunization Schedule. "DTP3 (Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis) and first-dose measles vaccine coverage have plateaued globally at 85 per cent", it added."Progress towards the eradication of wild poliovirus and the elimination of measles, rubella, and maternal and neonatal tetanus is now too slow to be achieved by the end of the decade".
