President Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Monday aimed at boosting US investment in, and development, of artificial intelligence capabilities.

The initiative outlines "bold, decisive actions to ensure that AI continues to be fueled by American ingenuity, reflects American values and is applied for the benefit of the American people", the official said.

The directive will call for better coordination across government agencies, developing regulatory and ethics rules for the use of artificial intelligence, and require federal departments to track spending on research and development of AI.

However Trump claims that the initiative will make sure the United States keeps its research and development advantage in AI and related areas, such as advanced manufacturing and quantum computing.

While an official American AI Initiative is a welcome move, those in the industry will be disappointed that the initiative doesn't actually include any new funding for AI development and is pretty light on details besides those laid out above.

Trump, in his State of the Union speech last week, said he was willing to work with lawmakers to deliver new and important infrastructure investment, including investments in the cutting-edge industries of the future, calling it a "necessity".

The order will instruct federal agencies to focus on artificial intelligence in their research and development efforts, senior administration officials said, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
