Georginio Wijnaldum reveals extent of his illness before Liverpool victory

'In terms of the players we've not seen any difference in any of the staff and that feeds into the players and we've not changed; whether we draw, win or lose it doesn't change.

As of now, Manchester city lead the standings on goal difference with 65 points from 27 games.

"City have had their rollicking off their manager and they've had their points dropped".

Despite Liverpool playing some brilliant stuff and deservedly racing ahead at Christmas, for me the victor will be Manchester City.

Oh, and the second biggest gap between places anywhere in the division?

Liverpool ended the week in the second position, after Manchester city thrashed a lackluster Chelsea side at the Etihad stadium on Sunday. It came seven days after they had eased past Arsenal 3-1. The third goal, scored by Mohammed Salah, proves just how effective this connection was.

Wijnaldum, who cost Liverpool a reported £22 million ($28 million) when he signed from Newcastle in 2016, is optimistic they can cope with competing on two fronts. Nobody would have predicted last season's 13th-placed and 14th-placed clubs, Leeds United and Norwich City, to be occupying the summit of the table just less than a year later.

Liverpool may be level pegging on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, but Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has admitted it will be a "real struggle" for them to lift the title in May.

The performance against a Bournemouth side who have now lost nine away matches in succession and have 13 defeats in the last 18 matches in all competitions showed a return to the high-energy pressing game and clinical counter-attacking which has been so successful for Liverpool.

This was meant to be a top two by now, but Tottenham continue to defy those who predicted that injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli would cut them adrift.

Their win over Bournemouth at the weekend looks to have re-energised Jürgen Klopp's side and there's not one game, looking at the games, ahead they should fear.

For all that, the suspicion is that this remains a two-horse race for the title.

This is due to a variety of factors, but given how close Liverpool are to securing silverware it should not be, and this is the point made in the buildup to the clash with Bournemouth.
