President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Monday launching the American Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative, a senior administration official told reporters in a background call over the weekend.

"Maintaining American leadership in AI requires a concerted effort to promote advancements in technology and innovation, while protecting American technology, economic and national security, civil liberties, privacy, and American values and enhancing worldwide and industry collaboration with foreign partners and allies", the Monday executive order reads. The Trump administration didn't disclose when it expects to reach its AI development goals.

"I am eager to work with you on legislation to deliver new and important infrastructure investment, including investments in the cutting edge industries of the future", Trump said in a White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) press statement.

America is widely considered the world leader in artificial intelligence - however, many believe the Chinese government's vast access to data might give it an advantage in the coming years. "This is not an option".

The initiative also allows federal agencies to offer more data, models, and computing resources to the country's AI researchers and industries. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will implement standards that support trustworthy AI systems.

Retrain workers: It will ask agencies to prioritize preparing workers for the changes brought about by AI through apprenticeships, skills programs, and fellowships.

The so-called American AI Initiative does not directly target the communist country, but some experts believe the approach leaves no doubt about the administration's designs.
