Motorola's 5G Moto Mod for Moto z3 Now Available on Verizon

Verizon started a 5G home broadband and TV service in parts of four cities a year ago. Only one of the current 4G devices in the carrier's lineup can be upgraded to 5G, and that's what Verizon is essentially offering its subscribers.

Just like 4G a few years ago, initial 5G coverage will be limited to a few markets and the same goes for Verizon. That means a single Above Unlimited line with 5G access will cost $105 a month with a $5 Auto Pay discount.

Good news, Verizon, the exclusive 5G carrier of the Moto Z3, is opening pre-orders at a much more reasonable $50 (about £38, AU$70), and 5G plans start at an extra $10 a month. If the merger is blocked, Verizon will have less competition dominating the 5G market in the U.S. AT&T is also upgrading its networks to 5G. For existing customers with the $30 phone plan, it will start at $50 per month.

Verizon is also planning to sell the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, but there's no availability date yet. Verizon would not say how 5G pricing would work with those phones. Of course, you'll need a compatible phone and there are none at this point. Verizon told The Verge that in the Windy City, they'll be focusing on service on The Loop near landmarks like Willis Tower, Millennium Park and Union Station as well as in the River North, Gold Coast and Old Town areas. Buy it later, and you'll have to pay $349.99.

"5G Mobility service in Chicago and Minneapolis, and all Verizon 5G services going forward, use the NR standard developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)", Verizon's press release said.

In preparation of the rollout, Verizon will be opening pre-orders for its 5G Moto Mod on March 14. By the way, the handset can be obtained free of charge from Big Red with a device payment plan and new line of service, fetching $10 a month for a total of $240 for upgrading customers.

The Motorola 5G Moto Mod packs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC that is used to boot the company's X50 modem, the key enabler of the developer's 5G platform.
