The Senegalese forward opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and added another in the 84th minute after Virgil van Dijk had edged Liverpool ahead following Joel Matip's own goal in the first half.

The Netherlands global has been a consistent presence at the back for Jurgen Klopp's men since his world-record transfer from Southampton in January 2018.

Sadio Mane scored twice to hand Liverpool a 3-1 victory at Bayern Munich on Wednesday with a dominant performance that sent them through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 27-year-old was imperious in defence, too.

The Bavarians, who had reached the Champions League quarter-finals or better in each of the last seven seasons, needed a second with Liverpool heading through on the away goals rule.

The ex-England global also praised Van Dijk for his assured style of play before admitting he would love to have played with the Dutchman.

"But the truth is that I don't think Bayern knew what they wanted to do".

"When players see him as calm as he is in every situation, it rubs off and everyone puffs themselves out as well".

"It's a really big night, not only for Liverpool but I think for England", said midfielder Wijnaldum.

Guardiola said: "I would like to be more who we are in the first 25 minutes but we were solid, we didn't concede chances and in the last 15 minutes [before the break] and second half we were incredibly good". We had [Daniel] Agger and [Martin] Skrtel.

Klopp also believes winning so convincingly at a European powerhouse has propelled them back among the best teams on the continent.

After the last-16 first leg ended goalless at Anfield, five-times European champions Liverpool took control in Munich, bossing the game and nullifying their German opponents to become the fourth English team into the last eight.

Van Dijk will be expected to retain his spot in the starting XI against the Cottagers and Johnson believes he has mastered the art of defending.

"He is so young, already so mature, really strong, all good".
