"I'm not there yet, but the only way it's going to get better is if I begin, so this is my beginning", said the 63-year-old.

Goldberg became the moderator and co-host on The View in 2007, when she replaced Rosie O'Donnell. "And yes, I came very, very close to leaving the earth", she said.

Goldberg, who released a video statement last week discussing her near-death medical scare, said the illness was "hard" and "scary" for her and her family, and said she hopes that serves as a cautionary tale for everyone.

"I still have a cough and that's the last thing to go apparently", she said.

Whoopi didn't stay the whole show, but after speaking about her health with her costars, she said she'd probably be back on Monday.

Goldberg surprised Joy Behar, Ana Navarro, Meghan McCain, Abby Huntsman and Sunny Hostin on set during the taping of the show.

She said she didn't realize the full extent of her illness until she went to the hospital and a worker commented on the color of her face. "Even people who aren't huge fans of mine have actually been saying nice things about me", she continued. "That's how it was". And you think because you healed quick that something insane can't happen? "One of the things I discovered, your insurance really doesn't do much for you", Goldberg said. "There's little tiny stuff out there that will kill you that you never think of".

"You think you can push through because you have a little cold, and you think because you've healed before something insane can't happen. Well it could", she said. Whoopi Goldberg missed no less than a month of work after struggling with a really bad case of pneumonia that nearly killed her!

This is a breaking news story. Sixty years of insurance money and you're telling me I can't get this machine?

Her illness was first addressed during the February 20 episode, as fans began to question where Goldberg was. As for now, "my immune system is challenged", she said. However, earlier today, she took everyone by surprise, and that includes her co-hosts, when she showed up!

"There are all these conspiracy theories on the internet that she's not really sick and she's secretly preparing to host the Oscars", she continued.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on ABC.
