Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an emergency security meeting in the Kirya military headquarters following the event.

Residents report hearing at least two loud explosions. There have been several smaller rounds of fighting since, reined in by Egyptian and United Nations mediations. Israel's military has responded with widespread airstrikes.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility in the Gaza Strip, where its dominant Hamas group was engaged on Thursday in talks with Egypt on a long-term ceasefire with Israel. "It is responsible for what happens within the Strip and what emanates from it".

A statement by the Hamas armed wing said it was "not responsible for the firing of the rockets tonight towards the enemy".

In addition to Hamas, Gaza is home to other militant groups.

Israeli analysts speculated that Palestinian militants opposed to any deal between Hamas and Israel were behind the launchings.

About 40 minutes after the alarm went up, traffic was flowing normally on Tel Aviv's main Ayalon highway. Bomb shelters were opened across the city in response to the attack.

Earlier on Thursday, Hamas security forces in Gaza violently dispersed hundreds of Palestinians protesting against dire living conditions.

"I suggest to Hamas, don't count on it", he told his Cabinet. The situation on the Gaza border has reportedly escalated due to continued shelling and launches of arson balloons from Gaza into the Israeli territory, and the shooting and killing of protesters, medics, journalists and children near the border by IDF soldiers.
