Late previous year came word that the movie was in development; now The Hollywood Reporter says its found its director, Destin Daniel Cretton.

It was revealed that Marvel was developing a Shang-Chi film last December, though the company actually announced it would make a film based on the hero back in 2005 - once the MCU began taking shape, it appears Shang-Chi was put on the back-burner. However, with a Chinese-American director (and writer in Dave Callaham of Wonder Woman 1984), we should hopefully get a movie that Chinese-American audiences will respond to. The studio is reportedly hiring Destin Daniel Cretton to direct their first superhero movie with an Asian protagonist.

Cretton's prior credits include Short Term 12, which was adapted from a short film he made in 2009.

Cretton is best known for directing the critically lauded indie "Short Term 12" in 2013, starring Brie Larson, who was up-and-coming at the time, as a supervisor of a group home for teenagers experiencing mental health issues and abuse.

In the wrong hands, the Kung Fu character of Shang-Chi could open up Marvel Studios to accusations of stereotyping (and indeed, he was created by Jim Starlin and Steve Englehart as a response to the popularity of the show Kung Fu). Additionally, he is now directing Just Mercy, a biopic about Civil Rights attorney Bryan Stevenson starring Larson and Michael B. Jordan. Shang-Chi eventually fell into obscurity and he rarely appeared.

Shang-Chi does not yet have a release date, but with a script in development and now a director hired, it could be coming in just a couple of years.
