Health authorities say there have been 27 confirmed and a further 20 suspected measles cases in Canterbury so far.

The Sydney resident, who is aged in his 30s with an unknown vaccination status, developed measles a few days after returning home from Pakistan.

Some people think that instead of vaccines they can user nosodes, homeopathic remedies, but Health Canada has addressed the false claims around them in an advisory warning.

Cases of measles had soared worldwide because of complacency by parents who were not vaccinating their children, UNICEF said.

The Canterbury DHB is working with the Ministry of Health and PHARMAC on vaccine availability for priority groups.

"I urge my fellow health care provider colleagues to take the time to answer the questions of concerned parents, and in turn, I urge parents and guardians to ask questions and seek out trusted and reliable sources of information to help guide them".

"We are targeting to vaccinate our schoolchildren at this time before school closes on April 5, since we are nearly finished vaccinating in our health centers", Duque said.

Earlier this month, authorities warned Australians who holiday in Bali and visitors to the Sydney Opera House to be on the look out for measles symptoms after a young woman and a baby contracted the disease.

The DOH said that the school-based immunization would be selective, meaning children who already received two doses of the Measles Containing Vaccine (MCV) would not be given any more.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases and can spread to others four days before and four days after the appearance of a rash. Some have spoken of hard recoveries that have taken weeks or months, sometimes leaving permanent disabilities, and heartbreakingly, some have spoken about losing their children.

Measles is a viral infection that is serious for small children but is easily preventable by a vaccine.

For children, the effects of the disease can be worse. "From my perspective, even one child dying of measles is unacceptable", says Tam, as a pediatric infectious disease specialist.
