Shots fired at mosque in central Christchurch

Media reported that a gunman opened fire inside mosque in Christchurch's Hagley Park.

Mohammad Isam, a Bangladeshi journalist for Cricinfo who was on the scene, said that all the players are safe, but want to fly back to Bangladesh.

The police recommended that residents across Christchurch remain off the streets and said schools would be locked down until further notice.

"They ran back through Hagley Park back to the Oval", he tweeted.

People in central Christchurch have been urged to stay indoors and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to 111.

He said he saw about four people injured and two people lying on the ground and did not know if they were alive or dead. They lost their one-day global series 3-0 and have also lost the three-Test series after New Zealand claimed victory in the opening two matches.

Bangladesh are scheduled to play New Zealand in the third and final Test of the series starting from Saturday.

Gunfire was heard coming from the direction of the mosque and several people were seen on the ground outside the building, One News reported.

Mike Bush issued a statement saying there was an active shooter situation that involved "multiple fatalities" and that they had one person in custody, but were unsure if there were any other people.

There are unconfirmed reports that there has been a second shooting at a mosque in Linwood. I'm speaking from experience, I'm speaking from what I've heard. Lots of people were sitting on the floor.

Mario Villavarayen, strength and conditioning coach of the Bangladesh cricket team said the players were shaken up, but fine.

Robert Weatherhead told the news website he had taken in about 13 men and a boy aged about three after they escaped from Al Noor Mosque.

At least six people are believed to have been killed, reported the New Zealand Herald.
