In exchange, the Dolphins get a fourth-round pick in 2020 and a seventh-round pick in 2019.

Ryan Tannehill has a new home.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been traded to the Tennessee Titans in a deal that also involves draft picks.

Tannehill is expected to replace Blaine Gabbert as the backup to Tennessee's Marcus Mariota. He picks up a valuable asset in the quarterback-rich 2020 draft for a player he must likely was going to cut anyway.

His contract was to balloon to $18.7 million in base salary this year, and he would have counted $26.6 million against the salary cap. Miami then got involved with Teddy Bridgewater, but the former first-round pick ultimately elected to return to the Saints to backup Drew Brees on a similar deal to what Tannehill is receiving in Tennessee. He posted a 42-46 record over six seasons, while throwing for 20,434 yards and 123 touchdowns with 75 interceptions. Tannehill has missed 25 games over his last three seasons due to a variety of injuries including a right shoulder capsule injury that cost him five games in 2018. Now the Titans have multiple options, both for the short- and long-term.

Mariota, 25, hasn't played a full 16-game season in his career.

What will the Dolphins do at quarterback?

They have been actively examining quarterbacks in the 2019 National Football League draft class, and they seem to be a strong candidate to select a prospect in the first round of this year's draft or the next one.
