Two top Facebook execs are leaving the company

"It is with great sadness I share with you that after thirteen years, I've chose to leave the company", Cox wrote in his post.

The move comes with Facebook struggling to cope with investigations and complaints over data protection and privacy, and after Zuckerberg's announcement last week of a new focus for the platform. "This place will forever be a part of me". He had left a graduate program at Stanford University to join Facebook in 2005 as a software engineer and helped developed its original news feed feature.

Zuckerberg said he has no plans to replace Cox, though Daniels will be replaced by Will Cathcart, another longtime Facebook veteran.

Cox's departure removes a layer of management, bringing Zuckerberg closer to a family of apps that he wants to make compatible. Zuckerberg wrote that Cox considered leaving years ago to pursue new projects, but he made a decision to stay in 2016, around the time Facebook began taking heat for acting as a conduit for misinformation and Russian election interference.

Zuckerberg, in a separate post, said Cox had discussed the possibility of moving on "for a few years", but had remained for a transition period.

"As Mark has outlined, we are turning a new page in our product direction", Cox wrote in a statement.

Zuckerberg phrased that more delicately, noting that "We both realized we had too much important work to do to improve our products for society".

On Thursday, the company announced that Chief Product Officer Chris Cox and Chris Daniels, who heads Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp, are leaving. The shakeup is the second major management restructuring in as many years as the company also faces a number of controversies related to user privacy and fake news on its services. It isn't clear what future plans the executives have. "Instead, the leaders of Facebook (Fidji Simo), Instagram (Adam Mosseri), Messenger (Stan Chudnovsky), and WhatsApp (Will Cathcart) will report directly to me, and our Chief Marketing Officer (Antonio Lucio) will report directly to Sheryl".
