Federer breezes into Indian Wells semis

Rafael Nadal battled past Karen Khachanov in the last eight of the Indian Wells Masters to set up a semi-final meeting with Roger Federer.

Nadal leads Federer 23-15 on a head-to-head basis but the Swiss has won the past five encounters.

Federer added: "The way we go about it is very different, but yet we both find a way to excel". "The way he came up was very clay-court based, and I was apparently very grass-court based, and we both found our ways also on the other surface", Federer said.

Federer, meanwhile, broke Pole Hubert Hurkacz once in each set for a 6-4 6-4 win in the first career meeting between the pair and was perhaps more bothered by his early start. I am going to try my best to recover well and to be ready to enjoy one of these matches that I want to play against probably my biggest rival and at a later stage of our career. He twice called for a trainer, who applied tape just below Nadal's knee.

They have not met since Shanghai in 2017, the same year that Federer beat Nadal 6-2 6-3 in the fourth round at Indian Wells.

Federer said he might not feel quite the same tingle of anticipation as fans at the prospect of facing Nadal, but he acknowledged that their clashes always raise the stakes. He didn't play again until the Australian Open, where he fell in the championship match to Novak Djokovic.
