Gambino crime boss slain outside Staten Island home

NY media say it is the first targeted killing of a mob boss in the city since 1985.

The Gambino family was once considered the biggest organised crime group in the U.S., the New York Times reports, but began to decline after Gotti and other senior figures were jailed.

The reputed boss of the US Gambino crime family was shot to death in front of his NY home by a gunman who may have staged a vehicle accident to lure him outside, dying a virtual unknown compared with his swaggering 1980s-era predecessor, John Gotti.

Fox News noted, "Cali, who had roots in Sicily and ties to the Sicilian Mafia, was the highest-ranking organized crime figure to be murdered in New York City since 1985, when Paul Castellano was assassinated as he arrived as Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan, according to WPIX-TV".

Cali, 53, was shot outside his large, detached house in Staten Island at about 9.20pm on Wednesday, then run over with a pick-up truck.

According to local media in NY, he took the helm of the Gambino family in 2015, replacing Domenico Cefalu.

Alleged Gambino Crime Family Boss Frank Cali Shot Dead Outside Home

Cali was the boss of the Gambino crime family - one of five in the city operating as Italian-American mafia.

He was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was released in 2009.

"We thought those days were over", the city's mayor Bill de Blasio told journalists.

Unlike the well-dressed Gotti, Cali kept a low profile. "But I guess old habits die hard".

The New York Daily News reported in 2008 that Cali was among 62 people arrested on federal racketeering charges and he later pleaded guilty to conspiring to extort money. Gotti's brother Gene Gotti spent 29 years in prison for heroin distribution, but he got out in September 2018, leading to speculation as to what that could mean for the future of the organization.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola, a reputed associate of the Bonanno organisation, was shot dead at a takeaway restaurant in the Bronx, New York. After he was shot several times, Cali tried to crawl under his SUV to hide, Shea said.
