A final decision is due to be made at the meeting of FIFA Congress in Paris in June.

The new competition is expected to include eight teams from Europe.

"We know the current form doesn't work", FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani told the AP.

It has already been agreed that the 2026 tournament, to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and United States, will feature 48 teams.

It will run every four years and take place from June to July in the slot now used for the World Cup warm-up event, the Confederations Cup.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the proposed expanded Club World Cup would be scheduled to take place in June 2021, in the slot where the Confederations Cup would have taken place.

Following Infantino's announcement, a spokesperson for the ECA said: "ECA clubs will not participate in 2021 CWC and will assess participation in editions of the competition post-2024".

The FIFA Council is also expected to decide to continue exploring plans to expand the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams with the possibility of additional hosting in other countries.

Infantino had hoped to get backing this week for creating two new, potentially money-spinning, tournaments - a new worldwide Nations League for national teams and a fresh 24-team Club World Cup to start with a "pilot" edition in 2021.

Describing himself as a "very happy man", the Federation Internationale de Football Association president, Gianni Infantino, announced the decision after a meeting of the ruling council in Miami on Friday. If it happens, fantastic.

The letter, sections of which were published in the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung says they are "firmly against any approval of a revised Club World Cup at this point in time and confirm that no ECA clubs would take part to such a competition".

The revamped FIFA Club World Cup will be played during the global match calendar slot that corresponded to the FIFA Confederations Cup.

"I am always happy but especially today because we have taken some important decisions. We want to have an exciting competition, we want to have a prestigious competition, we want to have an inclusive competition and we will have this in the new Club World Cup starting in 2021". Spain are the current holders, they beat Mexico 2-1 in the final in Uruguay previous year - the first time they won the tournament to become the fifth country to win the U-17 World Cup.

The women's under-17 World Cup has 16 nations and Das had said that they can host matches at "just four cities".

VAR made its World Cup debut at the men's tournament in Russian Federation a year ago.
