The S&P 500 slipped on Thursday, snapping a three-day streak of gains, as uncertainty over when a trade deal between the United States and China would be reached left investors on edge. He spoke optimistically of the USA and China being able to reach an agreement, declaring that "China has not been doing well".

A date is yet to be set for the summit that Trump and Xi Jingping were expected to hold this March at Trump's Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, and in-person talks between trade teams have not been held in more than two weeks. "We can have the deal completed and come and sign or we can get the deal nearly completed and negotiate some of the final points".

Responding to a question, Trump said his Chinese counterpart does not end up in what he did in Hanoi last month when he walked out of his summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un because the deal on the table was not in the best interest of the US.

He cautioned that "President Xi saw that I'm somebody who believes in walking when a deal is not done".

So far, the US has imposed tariffs on USD250 billion of Chinese imports.

"And then if one gets done, it will be something that people are going to be talking about for a long time because we have been really taken advantage of for a long time". Tariffs imposed from both sides since previous year are continuing to drag on the global economy with no end in sight.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that trade war negotiations with China should wrap up within four weeks and expressed optimism about striking a deal, as top negotiators held new phone talks.

"But it's an exciting time in terms of trade".

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said after the White House meeting with Trump that he urged the president and lawmakers "to solve this tariff issue on steel and aluminum".

On December 31, I noted Trump Hails "Big Progress" on Trade Deal With China. "We're going to go tariffs", said the US President. "We can have the deal completed and come and sign or we can get the deal nearly completed and negotiate some of the final points", Trump said during a press conference at the White House. But he disagrees with Trump on the merits of tariffs. I want the deal to be right.

At a separate hearing in the House of Representatives on Thursday, Mnuchin said he expected elements of the discussions to be resolved in the near future, as the two sides pore over a 150-page document they are working on.
