An additional person died at the hospital.

The two mosques are about five kilometres apart.

Prime Minister Theresa May in a tweet said: "deepest condolences to the people of New Zealand after the horrifying terrorist attack in Christchurch". Police do not believe there are any other suspects but said it was still an open investigation.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant appeared in court Saturday morning amid strict security and showed no emotion when the judge read him one murder charge. Gray also said she recalled that Tarrant's father Rodney died from some kind of asbestos-related illness when Tarrant was finishing high school. In other forums, people discussed Muslim food restrictions as they prepared to drop off meals for those affected.

Authorities have not specified who they detained, but said none had been on any watch list. "Two explosive devices attached to suspects' vehicles have now been found and they have been disarmed", Ardern said in a televised address. He said he then went into the mosque to try to help.

A number of weapons were also recovered at both the Linwood and Dean Avenue locations.

Police were still treating the incident as ongoing into Friday evening local time and urged Christchurch residents to stay indoors and monitor the police website and social media. "To close your doors until you hear from us again", he said.

"It is clear that this can only be described as a terrorist attack", Ardern told the Herald.

The visiting Bangladesh cricket team was arriving for prayers at one of the mosques when the shooting started but all members were safe, a team coach told Reuters. "As you can imagine, this is requiring every police and emergency resource we have available".

Australia's prime minister Scott Morrison said one of those arrested was an Australian citizen.

Ardern confirmed that one of the attackers was Australian. The manifesto was not signed.

A gunman broadcast live footage on Facebook of the attack on one mosque in the city of Christchurch, mirroring the carnage played out in video games, after publishing a "manifesto" in which he denounced immigrants.

Iman Atta from the group said: "We are appalled to hear about the mass casualties in New Zealand. We are working to have any footage removed". Reuters was unable to confirm the authenticity of the footage.

Officers first responded to reports of shots being fired at in Christchurch at around 1:40pm (12:40am GMT). The mosques were packed with worshippers gathered for Friday prayers. He walks back into the mosque, where there are at least two dozen people lying on the ground. The gunmen came from the backside.

"I saw dead people everywhere".

The YouTuber is now the most subscribed to person on the platform and since another channel has been very close to taking that number one spot from him for a while, the words used by Tarrant had become pretty much a meme, as well as a way for people to support the Swedish entertainer.

Three Bangladeshis were among the dead and one was missing, the consulate said.

"I could not contact two of my friends who are in the mosque as well", he said.

Another man said he saw children being shot.

One man outside the mosque said that he prayed that the gunman would "run out of bullets".

Christchurch is a coastal city of 404,500 residents.

New Zealand, with a population of 5 million, has relatively loose gun laws and an estimated 1.5 million firearms, or roughly one for every three people. It has an agricultural economy. Several more people were killed in an attack on a second mosque in the city a short time later.

Just 1% of New Zealand's population of nearly five million are Muslim, according to government statistics, less than 50,000 people in 2013.

National carrier Air New Zealand canceled at least 17 flights in and out of Christchurch, saying it couldn't properly screen customers and their baggage following the shootings.

He described Christchurch as a "very peaceful city" that is still getting over the devastating 6.3 magnitude natural disaster that hit in 2011. This is a place where people should feel secure and will feel secure.
