His comments risked inflaming Democratic concerns that Barr's views are overly in sync with Trump's and that he's determined to protect the president as he readies the release of a version of Mueller's report. He said that the letter may have been read to them, but they did not get a hard copy of it.

Barr is appearing before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee one day after he testified before a House subcommittee and answered many - though not all - questions from lawmakers about the release of Mueller's almost 400 page report.

The move indicates Barr is following Republicans' lead on the matter.

Barr, appearing before a Senate panel, did not say what "spying" had taken place but seemed likely to be alluding to a surveillance warrant the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained on a Trump associate. The one possible exception he left open: If the chairmen of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees wanted to see the full report, Barr seems to suggest he would be willing to talk to them about that.

Barr was testifying for a second day at a congressional budget hearing that was dominated by questions about special counsel Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia investigation.

Democrats say they can't know what to make of Mueller's findings until they see them for themselves, but Barr's office has been working with Mueller's team to redact material before anyone outside a handful of Justice Department officials sees the report.

Barr is set to return to the House and Senate for hearings focused on the Mueller investigation.

"I believe that our country must respond to any foreign interference with the strongest measures, and we must work with partners at the state level to ensure that our election infrastructure is completely protected", his statement says.

Fox News is also told that the Justice Department's Inspector General (IG) is separately looking into whether former FBI Director James Comey mishandled classified information by including a variety of sensitive matters in his private memos, including the name and code name of a confidential human source.

Barr said he was reviewing his department's actions in investigating Trump.

Mueller concluded that neither Trump nor anyone in his campaign colluded with Russian Federation. Three-quarters of Americans think the full Mueller report should be made public, according to a PBS NewsHour-NPR-Marist poll conducted after the report was filed. Barr didn't answer, insisting he has said everything he planned to say about the report until it comes out.

Barr defends the infamous four-page letter: Barr has been heavily criticized by Democrats for the four-page letter he sent to Congress upon reviewing Mueller's report; specifically, the portion where he determined that President Donald Trump should not be charged with obstruction of justice based on the available evidence.
