Elon Musk Calls Jeff Bezos Copycat Over Amazon's Internet Satellite Plan

In his annual letter to Amazon shareholders, CEO Jeff Bezos challenged other retailers to match the company's $15-an-hour minimum wage. Do it! Better yet, go to US$16 and throw the gauntlet back at us.

Amazon's largesse is not unwarranted and perhaps Bezos can be forgiven for gloating, given that the US minimum wage is still just $7.25 an hour.

Late past year, Amazon jumped ahead of many rivals by raising its minimum wage for US workers to $15 an hour.

Walmart's executive vice president of corporate affairs, Dan Bartlett, responded to Bezos by tweeting, "Hey retail competitors out there (you know who you are) how about paying your taxes?"

Amazon's third party sales in 2018 accounted for 58 percent of total sales, up from 56 percent in 2017, Bezos said. As for Amazon's competitors, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has a minimum wage of $11 per hour and Target Stores Inc. pays $12, soon to be increased to $13.

Bezos covered a wide range of topics in his annual letter to shareholders Thursday that was released on Twitter and filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Bezos said in his letter that the wage hike has benefited more than 250,000 Amazon employees and over 100,000 seasonal employees who worked during the last holiday season at Amazon sites in the United States.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos says that Amazon needs to "occasionally have multibillion-dollar failures" so that the company is "experimenting at the right scale" for an organisation of its size. The pilots staging protests are from Atlas Air, Southern Air and ABX Air. "Developers doubled the number of Alexa skills to over 80,000, and customers spoke to Alexa tens of billions more times in 2018 compared to 2017".

Walmart has more than 1.5 million workers in the USA compared with just 350,000 at Amazon, so boosting wages would have more of an impact on the bottom line.

Inc. churned out profits last year that exceeded $10 billion, more than tripling net income from the previous year.
