Smith was part of teams that won nine major trophies while at Liverpool, including four league titles in England's top flight, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups and two FA Cups.

A tense moment for Liverpool players Tommy Smith (left) and Geoff Strong (second from right) as Inter-Milan player Mario Corso lunges in with a header during an attack by the Italian side in a semi-final, first leg match at Anfield, 5th May 1965.

Former team-mate Phil Thompson said: "I loved him from the Kop because of his passion, his will, his commitment, never say die attitude, it was everything Bill Shankly wanted from a player".

Liverpool posted a video of former player and manager Kenny Dalglish, who credited Smith with helping him settle at the club. "His memories will be there forever".

"To go and play alongside him, rub shoulders with him, go through battles with him, football battles with him. I think he played in the first FA Cup final that we won and scored a goal in the first European Cup final that we won".

The club put out a statement on their official Twitter account which reads: "We're deeply saddened by the passing of our former captain Tommy Smith, aged 74".

An uncompromising figure who embraced his warrior image to the full, Smith made 638 appearances for the club between 1960 and 1978 and was integral to the success that Liverpool enjoyed under the leadership of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Smith would later go on to suffer from Alzheimer's disease and dementia and is survived by daughter Janette, son Darren and four grandchildren. Dad was only in here since the end of January and prior to that had been living in a care and sheltered accommodation complex for three years in Maghull.

"The word legend is used a lot, certainly at Liverpool Football Club".

"He had been growing increasingly frail and suffering from a variety of ailments over the last three months especially".

Smith took over the lease of Liverpool's famous music venue, The Cavern Club, after retirement.
