The Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was engulfed in flames on Monday, police said, causing untold damage to the iconic building just days before Easter Sunday.

A collection of dramatic videos and photos spread through social media showing the roof and spire of the almost 900-year-old cathedral engulfed in flames and massive amounts of smoke billowing up from its roof.

The fire department said a major operation was underway.

It's unclear if anyone has been hurt in the fire.

The blaze has spread to the giant spire of the medieval cathedral. "I urge everyone to respect the security perimeter". Massive plumes of yellow brown smoke is filling the air above Notre Dame Cathedral and ash is falling on tourists and others around the island that marks the center of Paris.

The cathedral is one the finest example of French Gothic architecture in Europe, and one of the most visited buildings in the world.

Notre Dame was undergoing renovations, with some sections under scaffolding, while bronze statues were removed last week for works, Reuters reported.

It survived the French Revolution in the late 18th century and benefited from a surge in popularity following the publication of Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" in 1831.
