She was rushed to St Barnabas Hospital in "extremely critical condition" where she later died. "Being in that building, there's no sort of methodology or way to have access to that, in my personal opinion.Don't really know how they got up there", Sean Johnson, a student said.

Fordham University has not commented on the incident.

Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather risky, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it".

Students confirmed it has become "a rite of passage" to climb the clock tower, touch the bell and take pictures before they graduate from the university.

Police say a Fordham University student was seriously injured after falling Sunday morning 140 feet from the school's iconic bell tower, according to multiple published reports. Bob Howe, assistant vice president for communications, explained that "access to that tower is always locked".

Her uncle Gregory Monfries, said: "This is not a good time". They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning. "If it is, it's kind of stupid", junior Linda Yenicag said.

Fordham Public Safety is still investigating how Monfries and her friends were able to get inside.

According to U.S. media reports, Ms Monfries slipped on her way up the tower's spiral staircase and was found by emergency services at about 3.17am.

The budding journalist, who was due to graduate next month, had completed a string of internships at a news network, InStyle magazine and a public relations company.

The university said they will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously. "Theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".
