Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin, right, of Russian Federation, punches Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov, also of Russian Federation, during the first period of Game 3 of an NHL hockey first-round playoff series in Raleigh, N.C., Monday, April 15, 2019.

Ovechkin challenged Svechnikov to the fight after the 19-year-old cross-checked him several times in front of Washington's net.

Ovechkin also dropped the gloves with Kris Versteeg back in 2013 in a game against the Panthers, but the tussle was not enough to warrant a fighting penalty, as the referees broke it up before it could truly escalate.

Evgeny Svechnikov is said to be a 22-year-old prospect of the Detroit Wings, so the likelihood that he would risk everything for revenge is highly unlikely. Ovechkin won in an absolute landslide. For Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in last year's draft who helped lead the 'Canes back into the postseason, it was his first in the big leagues.

The Capitals went on to win the game 5-0, with Carolina now trailing the best-of-seven series 2-0.

Tempers flared enough for Ovechkin to indulge in just the fourth fight of his career, and first since almost a decade ago, according to HockeyFights.com.
