"I made a decision to do the change of Lucas Torreira because after the red card, the atmosphere is against him and also the doctor said to me in the first half that he has a little pain for Thursday and I decided okay, it's the moment [to take him off]", Emery said following Arsenal's 1-0 win over Watford.

Plenty were surprised when it was Emery, most recently of Paris St Germain, who was selected following a rigorous interview process headed by former chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

"I didn't listen to him", Emery told a news conference after Arsenal moved up to fourth in the Premier League table.

"Everyone knows me and Arsenal don't get on too well", he said.

Watford were arguably the better side despite Arsenal's man advantage but suffered their first home loss of 2019 in any competition.

"Yes sometimes", Emery replied when asked if he met up with Gracia away from football. "We spoke with the players, they felt our support and it's all we can do in this moment, try to be together, to help them and nothing else".

"They are my friends, not only Javi Gracia but also his assistant Zigor Aranalde and Inigo Arteaga".

Gracia feels Deeney's challenge did not deserve a straight dismissal which means the club captain will miss games against Huddersfield, Southampton and Wolves.

"For example we had dinner, their coaches and with our coaches, one day in St Albans in September".

Arsenal leapfrogged Chelsea for fourth place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 victory at 10-man Watford on Monday night. But before I know it he was on me.

"They are very hard teams to battle because defensively they are very strong and this is now at Watford".

He said: "I think we can control the match better".
