In this race a year ago, Busch started from the rear for unapproved adjustments and led 32 laps to claim the win.

"It is home. It's one that I've been to many, many times when I wasn't racing", he said.

"I was struggling the last 40 laps", Truex said. Three weeks in a row I felt like we had a vehicle that could win the race and we haven't won.

Because he did, Truex gave Joe Gibbs Racing its sixth victory in nine races this season and won for the first time in his career on tracks shorter than a mile.

"It means a lot to finally break through", Truex said. That's six wins in the past eight Richmond MENCS races for the manufacturer.

Kyle Busch has grabbed the lead from Kevin Harvick during the the NASCAR Cup race at Richmond.

On larger tracks where drafting has been possible with the new aero package this season, teams had been waiting until the last possible moment to attempt qualifying runs, producing qualifying rounds of several minutes of no on-track action. You have to have good brakes, as well, and be able to turn the center.

More is yet to happen in this season-We have Saturdays Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway, and the odds of Busch maintaining this level seem low.

Joey Logano came in a close second. He was never able to make back up front to challenge for the lead.

"I was watching them race and thought that if I was just patient and saved my tires, I could get them", he added.

Five other teams failed inspection and had their qualifying speeds and pit selection disallowed.

Busch, who had led 103 laps, worked his way back up to 15th place by the end of second stage. They were seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson, Aric Almirola, Erik Jones, Daniel Suarez and Joey Gase.

The Joe Gibbs Racing star has won three times on the 0.75-mile, D-shaped oval and has been coming to the track for much of his life, even long before the Virginia racer became a driver in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. "Tonight we didn't have the best auto, but we've lost some here with the best vehicle". We had a decent green-flag cycle that got us up again ... and then we reeled in the 19 (Truex) and the 14 (Bowyer) from pretty far back.

Kyle Busch led 101 laps and finished eighth for his ninth straight Top 10 finish to start the season. Besides his success in the Cup series, Busch has started four races in the Truck series and won them all, and won three of four Xfinity races.
