How to help rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral

"My father and myself have made a decision to release a sum of €100 million from our Artemis funds [the family holding company] to participate in the effort that will be necessary for the complete reconstruction of Notre-Dame", Pinault said in a statement obtained by French newspaper Le Figaro.

Businessman Francois-Henri Pinault and his billionaire father Francois Pinault said they were immediately giving 100 million euros from their company, Artemis, to help finance repairs to the cathedral devastated by fire Monday night.

People are now recognising that Windsor's photo is one of the last to capture Notre Dame with its spire and roof fully intact.

French President Emmanuel Macron ratcheted up the pressure by setting a five-year deadline to restore the 12th-century landmark.

So far, pledges for rebuilding have exceeded $700 million. Not only do they have a home near the cathedral but the couple were also married nearby in a civil ceremony 10 years ago.

President Donald Trump during a phone call on Tuesday expressed condolences to French President Emmanuel Macron over the Notre-Dame fire that devastated the Parisian landmark and offered USA assistance in rehabilitating the cathedral, the White House said.

A second, equally prophetic passage has circulated widely on social media in France since the fire that destroyed large parts of the cathedral's roof and sent its spire toppling into the nave.

Construction on Notre Dame - French for "Our Lady" - began in the 12th century and continued for almost 200 years.

Officials consider the fire an accident, possibly as a result of restoration work taking place at the global architectural treasure, but that news has done nothing to ease the national mourning.

Support came from outside France as well, with Apple chief Tim Cook announcing the tech giant would give an unspecified amount to help restore a "precious heritage for future generations". But no one can tell whether it has been damaged by water or will need to be restored.

The fire at the 856-year-old cathedral began Monday evening local time.

Offers of practical assistance have flooded in from across Europe: Poland's President Andrzej Duda has extended the service of his country's reconstruction experts, famed for their restoration of Warsaw buildings razed to the ground in World War II; while the York Glaziers Trust in Britain, which restored the windows of York Minster cathedral when it was gutted by fire in 1984, has volunteered its expertise.

"We have everything to be able to rebuild it in exactly the same way", Riester told France Inter, adding that the government was looking at ways to encourage donations.

The cost of a likely multi-year restoration project could itself take a year to become clear, industry experts said. "The majesty of Notre Dame - the history, artistry, and spirituality - took our breath away, lifting us to a higher understanding of who we are and who we can be", she tweeted.
