Citing multiple sources familiar with the company's plans, Thurrott reports that Microsoft is working on a pair of earbuds under the codename "Morrison" - possibly a reference to Jim Morrison, former lead singer of the Doors.

Microsoft's Surface headphones and their carrying case.

The device is being developed as part of a secret project, codenamed 'Morrison, ' and could be coming as soon as later this year.

When it comes to features, it's not yet clear how Microsoft wants its earbuds to differentiate from the other similar products on the market. "The company is looking to capitalize upon the development of its audio tech by expanding its portfolio to cover the two major categories of headphones: over-ear and in-ear".

Although the Surface headphones, came to the market with clever controls and good connectivity, they failed to make an impact with sound quality or price. To recall, Microsoft in October previous year unveiled its over-ear Surface Headphones with 40mm drivers. Of course the difference here would be that Microsoft's option would be powered by Cortana, its own AI and competition to Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.

Tech giant Microsoft is reportedly developing the Apple AirPods rival, allegedly called the Surface Buds. Microsoft is also likely to include Cortana integration and a noise cancellation function to attract customers.

They'll come with a wireless charging case akin to the one just released with Apple's second-generation AirPods. According to Sams, a 2019 release date for the Surface Buds (not the official retail name yet) is "plausible", but we'll have to wait and see.
