The 2020 Lincoln Corsair debuts at the NY auto show

Having the brand new Aviator to rely on for inspiration, Lincoln compacted most of the features of the bigger SUV and packed them into the Corsair, down to the six symphonic chimes that act as electronic alerts and are poised to become one of the brand's signature features.

Despite the design similarities inside, the Corsair does get some unique attributes.

Amid much marketing-and-design jargon from Lincoln executives-including references to the brand's "Quiet Flight" slogan, and interiors as "human sanctuaries"-we dug deeper to understand how the Corsair can stand out in its sharp-elbowed marketplace".

On the technology front, Corsair incorporates the Lincoln Way phone-as-key app, which means that Corsair owners can lock and unlock, open the liftgate and start the engine with their smartphone.

The Corsair can be had at launch with either a 250 hp 2.0-liter or 280 hp 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, both matched to 8-speed transmissions and available with all-wheel-drive. Overall, the new look is a radical departure from the first-generation MKC outside of the short distance between the A-pillar and the front wheels, with this one looking ready to compete with some of the best compact luxury SUVs.

The Lincoln MKC, the Corsair's predecessor, was the last vehicle to join the Lincoln lineup under a previous push to make the brand's products sportier, as well as more European-flavored and distinct in their styling.

The engine palette of the Lincoln Corsair now consists of two options.

The padded cabin aims for the conservative, wad-of-cash American flair of the Navigator and Aviator, albeit at a lower price point.

Lincoln noted that "Corsair" is derived from the Latin word for "journey", but of course a corsair is also a small, fast ship (sometimes associated with pirates!) and the name has been often used in aviation. Lincoln's cosseting, 24-way "Perfect Position" front seats are a lux option, including individual thigh bolsters and massage.

The interior's cantilever console appears to float.

Lincoln Co-Pilot360 will be standard, with pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, lane-keeping, and auto high-beams.

There is a specially tuned 14-speaker Revel premium audio system.

With Co-Pilot360 plus you get the usual adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist with some speed sign recognition and stop-go-go assist sprinkled on top. But cargo space behind the upright second row is also generous, as Lincoln demonstrated by stacking four massive suitcases inside.

Ford says the new Corsair will begin arriving at dealerships this fall.
