Manchester City are slowing developing themselves as one of the strongest teams in Europe, having garnered a total of 198 points across the 76 league matches they played in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

"I think it has been a wonderful season and finishing second with 97 points says a whole lot against a City side which has been revered as one of the best in the league".

Salah shared the prize with team-mate Sadio Mane and Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the trio finished the campaign with 22 goals each.

The Reds, who last won the league in 1990, face Tottenham in the Champions League final on Saturday, 1 June.

Klopp did not seem disappointed by the failure as much as he seemed ready for the next season, saying: "The team made so many big steps in the a year ago".

"I wouldn't have felt the same if we'd lost but I just wanted us to deal with this situation for our own future". "Ninety-seven points wins every single league apart from last season, so if we do that again we will keep knocking on the door and we won't be far off it".

That tantalising moment lasted only a matter of seconds, however, as Sergio Aguero equalised for City, who went onto shatter Liverpool's hopes with a ruthless goal-spree.

"This team is not a finished article".

"It's also the mentality of the boys and the manager, setting us up how we want to play and sticking to our beliefs".

De Ligt has been in sensational form for Ajax and was titanic in the Champions League and were seconds away from a final before Spurs ace Lucas Moura scored at the death.

The ex-England global told the Mirror : "I don't buy into the theory that Liverpool will automatically be Manchester City's main challengers next season just because they ran them so close this time. We will go again but give me a few hours to get over that".

"It's a very special season, a better season than I played with my team (Borussia Dortmund) when we were champions in Germany".

"We have made unbelievable big steps and I expect more to come - what that means in the end, I don't know".

He said: "This title race between City and Liverpool was wonderful for the competition and everyone who loves the game". Our target during the week was to get 97 points, we got that - that's special.
