A top law enforcement official told ABC News that detectives are trying to determine if a round from the security officer's firearm struck and wounded an innocent student.

The student who died in Tuesday's shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado has been identified and is being credited with helping save the lives of his classmates.

"I know that my client is a hero and I know that he did everything in his power to protect the kids, and the staff and the faculty that he knows and works with every day", the guard's attorney, Robert Burk, said in an interview Thursday.

Erickson, a senior, allegedly opened fire on his classmates with a pistol - along with another student, Alec McKinney, who is a female but identifies as male - just three days before they were set to graduate.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the security guard restrained one of the shooting suspects until deputies arrived.

An anonymous complaint almost five months before a deadly shooting at the STEM School Highlands Ranch alleged that a "high-pressure environment" made it susceptible to an attack like the ones that happened at Columbine and Arapahoe high schools.

In the years after Columbine, Whitus trained police across the country how to immediately confront active shooters in similar situations.

A second shooter was captured by an armed security guard.

Kendrick's friends say he was friendly, had an infectious smile and gentle sense of humor.

"STEM did not receive responses from any parents or students with information about these allegations", Eucker said. And court documents in the case of the older suspect, 18-year-old STEM student Devon Erickson, are also sealed because the case in its entirety was suppressed by a judge. Two young suspects, echoing the Columbine High School massacre 20 years ago, are alleged to have killed one and injured eight.

Investigators have not offered a motive for the shooting.

The suspects had been scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon to learn the charges against them.

In April 2018, the school resource officer became sick and was placed on modified duty at the school.

Many other students ran through the halls shouting or hid, The Associated Press reported.

The shooting is the 43rd incident of gunfire reported on a school campus so far in 2019 and the 116th mass shooting overall this year. But the lawsuit does not mention specifically mention anything about a shooting. Two high school students used at least two handguns in a fatal shooting on Tuesday at the charter school, authorities said Wednesday.

"We are pretty much really mad because they turned us into politics about gun control when we came here to respect our brother", said another.

At one point, someone shouted that students should be allowed to speak, and organizers talked with students in a hallway about how to include them. John Castillo said. "He gave up his life for others". One of the students tells Fox31 the timing was coincidental.
