But Gase, however, downplayed any rumors of clashes as recently as Friday.

Jets chariman and CEO, Christopher Johnson, released the following statement on Wednesday regarding the decision to fire the GM just three weeks after the NFL Draft.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas could be a leading contender to land the job. The Jets just allowed Maccagnan to do everything from overseeing the hiring of Gase as head coach to signing Le'Veon Bell in free agency to scouting and drafting all the Jets' new prospects taken in last month's National Football League draft.

The soap opera that is the New York Jets has had a hell of an episode today.

Whether he had a dispute with Gase or not, the move to fire Maccagnan (who still had two years on his contract) took many by surprise considering he signed several highly coveted free agents this off-season, including Bell and CJ Moseley, and conducted a draft in which the Jets had the third overall pick. "It kind of pisses me off a little bit".

The Jets went 10-6 in their first season under Maccagnan and former coach Todd Bowles in 2015, but the team has struggled through three consecutive losing seasons since.

"I don't know who decides to put that stuff out there", Gase said. Bowles was sacked after posting a 4-12 record last season. "In fact, he made it clear that he didn't want to spend a lot of money on any running back". The Jets also added wide receiver Jamison Crowder from the Washington Redskins and trade for offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele from the Oakland Raiders. ESPN reported during the draft that friction had developed between Maccagnan and Gase because of disagreements over personnel during free agency.
