Uber has a solution for chatty drivers

Uber has released a new feature, dubbed Rider Preferences that allows customers to ask for minimal conversation during a ride. Or just maybe not in the mood to make small talk during your trip? "If you're in the mood to chat, that's an option too", Uber revealed on its website.

"We know that when riders choose Uber Black and Uber Black SUV, they want a consistent, high quality experience every time they ride".

- Have you ever gotten into an uncomfortable conversation while using Uber? You can not use this option with Uber X or pool rides, but hopefully that changes soon.

The driver will have to wait up to 15 minutes for the rider, instead of the usual 1-5 minutes.


The announcement comes after months, if not years, of app users begging Uber to give them the choice to opt out of talking to drivers. What's more, Quite Mode's set of regulations are set at Uber's headquarters and will not be subject to market dynamics as is it the case with by-laws. "Quiet Mode, in particular, is something that people have been asking for for a long time", told Uber product manager Aydin Ghajar to TechCrunch. Of course, the development will be accompanied by a price premium, which should not be an issue for riders who need more, and are choosy about what they really want.

The features come online in the USA on May 15.

The features include steps to identify the right auto and a push notification to remind riders of the "Check Your Ride" steps just before their vehicle arrives, the ride-hailing company said.

Uber's new campus safety initiative is part of its effort to help students avoid fake rideshare drivers, among other things.

The pilot program will start with the University of SC, while other universities can get themselves enrolled.
