The latest case out of Chicago - in which 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was strangled and her baby cut from her womb - has similarities to numerous roughly 30 similar crimes carried out over the last three decades across the United States, an expert said.

The medical examiner announced Wednesday Ochoa-Uriostegui died of ligature strangulation, and her death is considered a homicide.

Any hopes that the young woman might still be alive were dashed on Wednesday, when officials confirmed that human remains discovered in a trash can outside a home on the southwest side of Chicago belonged to Ochoa-Lopez, and that her baby had been ripped from her womb.

They later found the body in a waste bin behind the house and recovered surveillance video that showed Ms Ochoa-Lopez's vehicle driving through the neighbourhood on the day they believed she was killed, authorities said.

When police arrived to question Figueroa, her daughter said her mother was in hospital with a leg injury, before adding she had just delivered a baby, said Brendan Deenihan, deputy chief of detectives.

Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, 19, was found strangled behind a house where she is alleged to have been lured to collect free baby clothes on 23 April.

A few hours later, Figueroa frantically called 911, claiming that her newborn baby was not breathing.

Police then conducted DNA tests to determine that Ms Ochoa-Lopez and her husband, Yiovanni Lopez, were actually his parents, Ms Walker said. The baby is in critical condition and on life support.

"The family has been on a roller coaster", said Ms Emma Lozano, a pastor at Lincoln United Methodist Church.

Clarisa Figueroa, 46, and her daughter, Desiree, 24, were both charged with first-degree murder. The motive for the killing is under investigation, but the superintendent said he assumed the suspect wanted to raise the child as her own.

Ochoa-Lopez's mother, Raquel Uriostegui, broke down after identifying her body.

Ms Evans and her 10-year-old daughter, Samantha, were killed in their Addison apartment and Ms Evans' 7-year-old son, Joshua, was found slain in a Maywood alley.

Ochoa-Lopez vanished last month after she went to get baby items from a woman she met on a Facebook group, Cecelia Garcia, a spokeswoman for the victim's family, told CNN affiliate WGN. They said that one of the women who lived there, in her 40s, suddenly had a baby without ever appearing to be pregnant, according to Cortes.

Police said the younger Figueroa confessed to assisting her mother in strangling Ochoa-Lopez.

She was seen three weeks ago after leaving Latino Youth High School and was supposed to pick up her 3-year-old son from day care. Her mother's boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, 40, faces a charge of concealment of a homicide.

"Her mother told me Marlen was always affectionate, but that day she seemed especially loving".

"Due to the fact that I'm in school and can't work at the moment, I can't afford to buy the rest of the things since I'm short on cash right now", Ochoa-Lopez wrote.

Police then searched the neighborhood and found Ochoa-Lopez's auto a few blocks away.

"She did nothing to them", said Yovani Lopez, her husband, reported the Chicago Tribune.
