A 49-year-old Kami Rita Sherpa set a new record of the most summits of Mount Everest by breaking his own previous records.

Kami Rita Sherpa is a native of Thame village of Solukhumbu district.

With the latest expedition, Kami Rita rose to records as the first person to have climbed Everest peak for the highest number of times. Aside from this almost two dozen summits on Everest, Rita has also reached other peaks including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu, and Lhotse.

Talking to media before leaving for Everest, the tireless Sherpa had articulated his intent to retire from climbing after he scales Everest for 25th times.

Most of the climbers are accompanied by a local guide - this means that in the short Everest season around 750 people are on the narrow path to the summit.

A guide for more than two decades, he first summited the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) peak in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition.

The first climbers to reach the summit in 1953- Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay also took the same route. "I am like a soldier who leaves behind their wives, children and family to battle for the pride of the country".

Kami Rita first scaled Everest in 1994 and has been making trips almost every year since.

Thus, the last year's record of 807 people could be broken, the reached the summit.

Sherpa tribespeople were mostly yak herders and traders living deep within the Himalayas until Nepal opened its borders in the 1950s. Officials say Rita reached the summit with other climbers Wednesday morning and all of them were reported to be safe.

"I know Mount Everest very well, having climbed it 22 times, but at the same time I know I may or may not come back", he told the Associated Press news agency last month.

Spring is the most popular climbing season in Nepal because of favorable weather conditions.
