Instagram’s IGTV gets support for landscape videos

Nearly a year after Instagram originally launched IGTV, the company has announced improvements to the feature based on creator and viewer feedback.

With this announcement, you'll still be able to watch the new landscape videos in portrait but with the black bars on top and below. For the most part, the heavy focus on the vertical video format was the highlight feature of IGTV - Instagram said it was a natural way of enjoying content on phones when it first launched. Today, the company says it is introducing a new landscape mode, following requests from Creators on its platform. But recent additions would suggest that it may well be running out of ideas, and ways to get more people across to its still relatively new video showcase.

Unfortunately, the biggest problem for IGTV is that it doesn't include many monetization features, which discourages creators and influencers from distributing their videos on the platform.

For IGTV, content creators had to separately shoot a video in a vertical square shape to suit the platform.

There are several technology companies that have shifted to video content recently as an effective and fresh way to attract users.

Now when landscape videos are supported, creators can use the same videos they edited for YouTube and publish on IGTV.

Instagram's decision to add landscape videos will be appreciated by both creators and viewers.

Commenting on this, Instagram said, "We realize this is an evolution from where IGTV started - we believe it's the right change for viewers and creators". The company anticipates the new horizontal video support will cause 'creativity to flourish and engagement to rise...' on its video platform over coming years. Even turning the smartphone, before the update, didn't switch to a full-screen horizontal view.
