Three launching United Kingdom 5G network in August

EE has already said that peak speeds on its 5G network right now could exceed 1Gbps, so if both EE and Three are right, then that would mean peak speeds of over 2Gbps on Three's 5G network, which is seriously fast. Three will launch its 5G network in August, which it claims will be the UK's fastest - but there is one major catch.

However, the exact dates for the service have not been mentioned yet, but the initial 5G home broadband service will be first available to London.

The launches are part of Three's £2 billion ($2.5 billion) 5G infrastructure investment commitment.

As Three is the only United Kingdom network provider to offer customers 100MHz of 5G spectrum, the company claims it will be the only one to offer "true" 5G.

Three claims that it has more 5G spectrum that the other big United Kingdom operators and that its network will be capable of hitting peak speeds that are "at least 2x faster" than its rivals.

5G will offer mobile connection speeds of almost 10 times current 4G speeds and is expected to cover 80 percent of network traffic, according to a press release.

"We have worked hard over a long period of time to be able to offer the best end-to-end 5G experience".

"Three is the only operator who can offer a "true" 5G experience which requires 100MHz of 5G spectrum, as set out by the ITU, the global standards body on 5G technology". 5G as a substitute for fixed broadband is an attractive idea - though possibly more useful in remote areas where firms are reluctant to lay fibre connections.

While EE and Vodafone will both have 5G mobile phones in the hands of customers in a number of cities next month, Three is still only saying that its mobile offering will be rolled out "by the end of 2019".

But Three is confident that it has acquired more useful spectrum than its rivals, and when consumers really start to take an interest in 5G next year it will be well-placed to race ahead. This includes a new 5G-ready cloud core network provided by Nokia.

The network investment programme also includes upgrades within Three's 4G network, expected to deliver up to 400 percent improvements in speed and capacity.

If everything goes as per the announcement, three's network will be the third in the country to provide 5G services.
