Dhawan picked up the injury during the match-winning hundred against Australia on Sunday.

India will monitor the progress of Shikhar Dhawan after reports emerged of the opening batsman suffering a hairline fracture on his left thumb.

Despite an injury to India's go-to man in the ICC tournaments, Shikhar Dhawan, India are still the favourites ahead of their World Cup 2019 clash against New Zealand on Thursday at Nottingham.

"Team India opening batsman Mr Shikhar Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team".

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said Dhawan is a huge asset for the team and should be given every chance to return if his injury heals in time.

The Indian team was forced to limit their practice session to mere throwdowns on the eve of the New Zealand encounter due to the gloomy weather and wet patches in the outfield. The Kiwis have won three out of the three games while India also triumphed in both the matches thus far.

There were calls from various quarters that Rishabh Pant should be called in as the replacement if Dhawan is unable to reach full fitness and is ruled out of the tournament.

Nottingham has been under a yellow alert - the first stage of weather warnings, meaning the weather could worsen - since Monday, casting a doubt over India's third World Cup game against New Zealand.
