Rather than delivering to your home, the drones will fly to designated zones, where couriers will pick up the goods and deliver them to your door.

At its Uber Elevate Summit, the company said it had regulatory approval to begin tests of delivering food by drone in the region of San Diego, California.

Uber's plans for flight expand well beyond flying cars for transporting people.

"We believe that Uber is uniquely positioned to take on this challenge as we're able to leverage the Uber Eats network of restaurant partners and delivery partners as well as the aviation experience and technology of Uber Elevate".

Uber said it had developed a proprietary airspace management system called Elevate Cloud Systems that will guide the drones to their location.

Uber Eats is the ride-hailing company's online food and delivery platform.

Ride-sharing company Uber has unveiled its third generation self-driving technology, and simultaneously addressed that infamous road rage trigger, the Volvo driver.

Also Wednesday, Uber announced that it would team with Volvo Cars to launch its newest self-driving vehicle. "When paired with our self-driving technology, this vehicle will be a key ingredient in Uber's autonomous product suite", commented Eric Meyhofer, CEO of Uber Advanced Technologies Group.

An array of sensors peppered atop and built into the vehicle are designed for Uber's self-driving system to safely operate the machine and maneuver it in an urban environment.

The most important features of Volvo Cars' autonomous drive-ready production vehicle include several back-up systems for both steering and braking functions as well as battery back-up power. In case the main systems fail, these back-up systems are capable of immediately bringing the auto to a stop. This is the third vehicle they've developed together.

This follows several prototypes which were built with the goal of sussing out the companies' self-driving auto development efforts.
