"He passed away this morning Friday June 14, 2019 from his severe brain injury". The baby had been on life support for more than a month and the family had been weighing whether to remove him from life support, but Garcia said the child simply died early Friday. Around the time the photo was taken, the baby opened his eyes. Clarisa Figueroa's boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, 40, was indicted on a charge of concealing a homicide, WLS said.

Clarissa Figueroa and her daughter Desiree Figueroa were formally charged Wednesday with first-degree murder for killing the 19-year-old pregnant mother, according to WGN.

"We were just praying and praying and he opened his eyes, and his dad said, 'Oh my God, he opened his eyes!'" Cecilia Garcia, a student pastor who was assisting the family, told CNN at the time.

The suspects will appear back in court on June 26. Bobak hired private attorney Hal Garfinkel, who claims Bobak is innocent of all charges.

Three people have been charged in connection with the murder, which police called an "unspeakable act of violence".

Clarisa Figueroa then got on top of the teen and strangled her for about four to five minutes, the prosecutor said.

She and her 24-year-old daughter, Desiree Figueroa, are charged with murder in the death of the baby's mother, 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, and Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Friday that he expects both women will now be charged with murder in the infant's death.

Asked about the family's motivation for slaying the teen and stealing her baby, Johnson replied: "Only they know that", reported ABC 7.

Her attackers cut the child from her body and took the newborn to a local hospital, claiming it was their own.

Police say Ochoa-Lopez was lured to a woman's home by an offer of free baby clothes.

"She can't just have disappeared in thin air", her mother, Raquel Uriostegui, said through an interpreter in May.

They say she plotted for months to acquire a newborn, and that she posted an ultrasound and photos of a room decorated for a baby on her Facebook page. She didn't know whether Yovani Lopez, Ochoa-Lopez's husband, was with his son at the time of death, though she noted he regularly spent the night at the hospital.

Authorities say that not long after Clarisa Figueroa's adult son died of natural causes, she told her family she was pregnant.

A medical examiner determined that she died of strangulation, and Desiree Figueroa told detectives she helped her mother kill her, police said.

Subsequent DNA tests revealed that Ms Ochoa-Lopez was the baby's mother.

"Words really can not express how disgusting and thoroughly disturbing these allegations are", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said last month.
