There are five Ghanaians and three Nigerians in all, who have been arrested by the security forces who undertook the operation to rescue the two females, said the minister.

Tilley and Chitty were kidnapped last week outside their hostel in Ghana's second city of Kumasi, the Ghanaian government said in a statement on Wednesday. The two are volunteers with Youth Challenge International.

Local media said the mastermind behind the attack was arrested in Togo a week ago.

Ghanaian actor and entrepreneur John Dumelo has asked the team of security experts from Canada who helped to rescue two kidnapped Canadian aid workers in the Ashanti Region to stay and help rescue the three kidnapped Ghanaian girls at Takoradi in the Western Region.

I would like to state without mincing words that, as at the time the National Security rescued the Canadian girls, the so called Canadian security experts were busily snoring in their beds and had no idea that, the National Security was on such mission.

The spokesperson said they wouldn't disclose further information regarding the women's "harrowing experiences". Consular officials were providing support for Tilley and Chitty and for their families.

One of the two kidnappers of the Takoradi girls have since been jailed for jailbreak. "Equally, the pleasure at finding out they were rescued and apparently physically unharmed is great".

We would like to thank the Government of Ghana for their cooperation in the resolution of this case. A previous rescue effort freed an Indian national.

"Citizens and travellers are once again assured that Ghana remains safe", the ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Ghana has always been considered one of the least unsafe countries in West Africa, but the women's abductions marked the second time in a month that foreigners had been targeted in Kumasi.
