It wasn't immediately clear when the computer issue would be solved. Many on social media claim that Target employees say that the malfunction is chain-wide.

"Our teams are troubleshooting now and we apologize for the inconvenience", the company wrote.

"We're aware that guests are now unable to make purchases at Target stores", the tweet said.

An employee at the Target in Jersey City confirmed that all registers were down at Target locations across the country.

Target, which has more than 1,800 stores across the USA, said it would "provide an update as soon as possible".

Among the trapped customers is Katie Rosman, a reporter for the New York Times.

Customers took to Twitter to complain about the outage under the hashtag #targetdown with many users commending Target employees for handling the situation well.

The company experienced a similar systems glitch exactly five years ago, when its registers went down for several hours on June 15, 2014.

This is a developing story.
