The busy Newark airport serving the NY area was briefly closed Saturday after a United Airlines flight experienced multiple flat tires upon landing and skidded partly off the runway, the airline and Federal Aviation Administration said.

United Airlines said in a statement that the plane "experienced multiple flat tires upon landing" and "became disabled".

All flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport have been halted because of an "airport emergency", according to the airport's official Twitter feed.

United Airlines said no passengers needed to be taken to the hospital and that those with minor injuries refused medical attention.

Travelers are encouraged to check with airlines before coming to the airport, according to a tweet from the airport.

The FAA initially said it skidded off the pavement, but later said it "veered to the left side of the pavement". "The aircraft will be towed off the airfield after passengers leave the aircraft via stairs".

The flight tracking website said that more than 400 flights in and out of the airport had been cancelled or delayed in connection with the incident.
