Spanish singer Julio Iglesias loses legal battle

Despite the lack of a paternity test, a judge in Spain ruled Wednesday that legendary singer Julio Iglesias is the father of a 43-year-old Spanish man, according to reports.

The judge in Valencia said there were enough clues to determine paternity, and cited Iglesias' refusal to "enable the collection of biological evidence" as one of the deciding factors.

Iglesias, 75, who was not in court, has consistently denied the accusation and his lawyers say he will appeal against the decision.

Mr Santos has spent much of his life seeking to prove he was the product of a 1975 fling between his mother, Portuguese former dancer Maria Edite, and Iglesias.

"The fact that some photos show Mrs Santos and Julio Iglesias together that summer in a professional context is no proof", Falomir told TV channel A Punt.

The judge refused to admit the DNA as evidence but in his ruling stated that "there is a clear physical resemblance between father and son" as well as the evidence that "at the time of conception there was a certain amount of contact between María Edite Santos and Julio Iglesias during which time it is not implausible that they had a sexual relationship". Although Mr Santos and Miss Edite won that case, the ruling was quashed on appeal.

The singer's defence team had argued that the trial should not take place since the case had already gone to court before and was dismissed in 1992.

Iglesias was married to his first wife Isabel Preysler when the affair with is said to have taken place.

The singer has eight other children, including pop star Enrique Iglesias.

"Don't ask me how many brothers I have", his son Julio Jr said in 2018 on television. It was reopened, however, after a private investigator obtained evidence from a water bottle left on a Miami beach by Julio Iglesias Jr. while he was surfing in 2017. "I don't even know myself".
