Angels cap emotional Tyler Skaggs tribute with combined no-hitter

On the day before what would have been Skaggs' 28th birthday, these astonishing Angels played a practically flawless game with his memory in their minds. Mike Trout, like all Angels players on Friday night wearing Skaggs' No. 45, homered.

There was a touching pregame ceremony, where Tyler Skaggs mother delivered the ceremonial first pitch. Her catcher was Andrew Heaney, Skaggs' best friend and fellow Angels rotation member. The Angels scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised from there. Gordon hit his only home run that season to lead off the bottom of the first in Miami's first game after Fernandez's death.

It is the first Angels no-hitter since Jared Weaver accomplished the feat against Minnesota on May 2, 2012.

After wining the incredibly emotional game, the Angels all returned to the pitcher's mound, upon which they laid all their #45 jersey in honor of Skaggs. "But for a lot of us, seeing each other again is nice".

A memorial created by fans in front of the Big A's main entrance has grown to the size of a pitcher's mound, with hats, signs and baseballs and other Angels memorabilia delivered to the stadium by heartbroken fans over the past 10 days.

"In a sense, it did open up the wounds a little bit, because it reminded us of the reality that Tyler is gone, we really miss him, and we would rather have him here", Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. The news was jarring, and L.A. still had to finish the trip through the Lone Star State before the All-Star break hit.

There were cheers and tears Friday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., before, during and after one of the most touching games in major league history.

"He's the life of the team, honestly", said veteran infielder Zack Cozart, Skaggs' teammate for the past two seasons. "We're going to keep playing for him the rest of the season, the rest of my career". But (after) tonight, when you think of Tyler, think of the day we wore his jersey to honor him and honor his family and honor Carli. You walk by his locker every day. "That's fine. We're human beings". Forty-five (Skaggs' jersey number) will always be in my mind.
