Reps. Veronica Escobar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley also visited the facilities this month.

"All I can say is, I don't know what she meant by that, " Meeks said of the "singling out" remarks.

The Trump administration has promised to veto the House measure.

Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Reps. "They're four people and that's how many votes they got".

The House overwhelmingly passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) barring President Trump from going to war with Iran without congressional approval Friday. But in the Democratic-led House, the Iran measure was one of several that were vital to securing support from liberal members, who had warned they might vote against the must-pass legislation.

Republican lawmakers blamed Democrats for blocking sufficient aid to improve conditions and posing as helping while doing little. It also came days before Trump-ordered nationwide raids targeting people in the USA illegally are expected to begin, according to administration officials and immigrant activists, actions that would further inflame the issue.

The report, requested by Congressman Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat who is chairman of the committee, harshly criticized Trump's "zero tolerance policy", initiated in 2018, which referred all individuals who illegally crossed the border into the country to the U.S. Department of Justice for prosecution.

Democrats accuse Trump of tolerating badly overcrowded and putrid holding facilities in a purposeful effort to discourage future immigrants. Iran shot down an American drone last month over what the US claimed was worldwide waters.

"On the floor, the bill has taken a radical left turn", said Texas Rep. Mac Thornberry, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee.

"She made it up", he said, adding that Border Patrol officials "love those people coming across the border".

The report found that hundreds of children were being held longer than the supposed 72-hour limit and faced clothing shortages and a lack of hot meals, while some adults were detained for a week in a cell so crowded they had to stand.

At least 18 migrant infants and toddlers under the age of two were separated from their parents at the border "including nine infants under the age of one", and kept apart for 20 days to six months.

The Democrats call separating children "a deliberate, unnecessary and cruel choice" by President Donald Trump.

Later Friday, though, Pence visited an outdoor portal at the McAllen Border Station, where 384 single men were being held in cages with no cots. Chakrabarti last week sent out a tweet comparing centrist Democrats to "new Southern Democrats" who "certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s", The Hill reported.

The tensions in the House drew the attention of Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Donald Trump, who mocked the incident as a "major meow mashup".

Democrats and Republicans are fighting over the treatment of the arrivals, whose numbers have surpassed 100,000 monthly. Democratic leaders allowed votes on a number of key amendments lobbied for by progressives.

"It is a policy of dehumanizing", said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., one of four high-profile Democratic freshmen who testified.
